Position Title: Construction Crew Assistant - Pinery Trail 

Department: Construction  

Status: 12-week,   Full-Time Summer Student Position (37.5 hours per week)               

Expected Start Date: June 5, 2017

Location: Pinery Trail - Scarborough Rouge Park


Organization Summary:

Habitat for Humanity Greater Toronto Area   (GTA) is a non-profit housing organization that mobilizes volunteers and   community partners to work with families to help them build a brighter future   and break the cycle of poverty through affordable homeownership. Habitat GTA   also operates a retail enterprise called ReStore, which sells new and   gently-used home furnishing and renovation materials at great prices. ReStore   proceeds support our mission to help   working, low-income families build a brighter future through affordable home   ownership. ReStore operates 10 locations across the GTA.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assisting the Site Supervisor with all aspects of building a new home.
  • Help orient volunteers, assist in gearing them up, pulling out/preparing needed equipment in advance of volunteers’ arrival on site and enforce safety
  • Assist Crew Leaders as they coach volunteers to use tools, perform tasks and follow safety standards
  • Participate in the build process (may include framing, dry walling, trim, painting and preparations for home occupancy)
  • Promote build site productivity by practicing good housekeeping, motivating volunteers, and  acting as ambassadors for the Habitat mission.


Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in a Secondary or Post-secondary program, a focus or interest in Architectural Engineering/Design, Construction Trades and/or Volunteer Engagement is preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Well-developed relationship building skills.
  • Self-starter who is able to work both independently and function well within a team.
  • Multi-tasking abilities and able to remain calm in stressful situation or environments
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting on a regular  basis in order to assist with various build site activities.
  • Full licence and access to a vehicle considered an asset.


To be eligible for this position, applicants must:

  • be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • have  been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and      intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;     
  • be a  Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection     has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act2; and,
  • be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
