about us

Next to food and water, shelter is one of the most basic needs we all share.

At Habitat for Humanity, we believe everyone deserves a safe, decent and affordable place to live, as well as the opportunity to take care of themselves and build their own future.

our mission

why it matters

We each have need of food, clothing, education, medical care, and companionship; but first, we must have a place to live and grow.

how it all works

Habitat for Humanity GTA is one of 1,400 affiliates worldwide working to build safe, decent and affordable homes that help families break the cycle of poverty. Every year, we partner with families, volunteers, donors and municipalities to build between 30-50 homes in Toronto, Brampton, Caledon and York Region.

It starts with good folks like you – generous, groups and individuals who want to make a difference in their community by…

Volunteering Time
Giving Money
Donating Stuff

…giving a hand up to working, low-income families by helping them build strength, stability and self-reliance through affordable homeownership.

We provide a unique “Habitat for Humanity mortgage” that makes home ownership affordable for lower income families. Instead of a cash down payment, families provide “sweat equity” of 500 volunteer hours helping build their home and the homes of others. Mortgage payments are calculated annually, so that shelter costs are never more than 30% of household income. As soon as a family starts to pay off their mortgage, we put those dollars to work helping us build the next home for the next family.

Donating, shopping or volunteering at Habitat ReStore also helps us build homes.
