Breaking ground for six families in York Region
On May 29, 2019, we were joined by members of the Georgina community to kick off our latest York Region build. Located in the Town of Georgina (Sutton), the Dalton Road build will consist of six, two-story new affordable housing townhome units. Families that will be moving into the homes are working, lower-income families in need of a safe, decent and affordable place to live.
The Ceremony was hosted by Ene Underwood, Habitat for Humanity GTA’s CEO, and featured speeches by Her Worship Margaret Quirk, Mayor of the Town of Georgina, and Greer Atkinson, a single mother of three and future Habitat homeowner at the site. Since 2011, we have built 19 Habitat homes for families in York Region.
Ene Underwood:
“According to the 2016 York Region Census Release Report, 52 per cent of renter households in York Region are spending 30 per cent or more of household income on housing costs, the highest in the GTA. We are thrilled to be building in the Town of Georgina, and look forward to continue partnering with all levels of government, businesses and members of the community to build more affordable housing in York Region.”
Mayor Margaret Quirk:
“The Town is excited to partner with Habitat for Humanity GTA on this townhouse project. This is a great opportunity for our community to show our community spirit and to give a hand up to help these six families become homeowners and new neighbours in Georgina.”
Who we’re supporting
Greer Atkinson is all about building resilient women who care about the well-being of their family and community. She is the Education Advisor for the Ogemawahj Tribal Council, Resident of Sutton, and member of the Chippewas of Georgina Island.
Despite her hard work, it is difficult to manage a household of four people on one salary. When she learned about the Dalton Road build, she was enthused to apply for a Habitat home.
When she received news that her family was approved for a Habitat home on Dalton Road, it could not come at a better time. The home will be close to where her daughters play sports, and it will be accessible to places for them to safely go out with friends as they grow older.
She will no longer have to deal with wasp and mice infestations in the fall, and mold problems due to the aging condition of her house. Most importantly, she won’t have to worry about the potential negative health outcomes of these dangerous housing problems.
