Habitat Durham and Habitat GTA have amalgamated!

Habitat Durham

On April 1st, 2020 we celebrated virtually as Habitat for Humanity Durham and Habitat for Humanity GTA joined forces. We are now happily merged and excited by the focus and resources this amalgamation brings to the local area, where we know there is a scarcity of safe and affordable housing for families.

With that objective in mind, we’ve gotten straight to work. Our first job – which started in September 2019–was to re-open the CentreTowne site to finish the 4 units already under construction and to start and complete Phase 5, a block of 6 townhomes next door. In the short months we had before the COVID-19 closure, we were pleased to see the increased participation of volunteers–crew leaders, individuals and corporate donors at the site. We consolidated our Ajax locations and moved to Oshawa in order to benefit from the proximity of our build, Mid-Town Mall ReStore and new 310 Simcoe Street South office operations. We’ve boosted the inventory of both the Oshawa and the Uxbridge ReStores and re-organized the layouts to increase the quality of your shopping experience, with reopenings on May 21st and May 22nd respectively.

We look forward to building on our success when the COVID-19 crisis subsides. We will have lots of great volunteer opportunities for both individuals and groups. And, we are looking beyond 2020 with preliminary work on a future project of 50 townhomes in the City Of Oshawa, thanks to the support of Mayor Dan Carter, Oshawa City councillors and staff and the Region of Durham.

While COVID-19 has changed our lives right now, what hasn’t changed is the daily reality lived by thousands of families, many of whom have worked as front-line workers during the crisis, who struggle to have a safe, decent place to live.

Now, even more than before, safe and affordable homeownership in the Region of Durham is a necessity to fulfill its overall potential. The goal is to continue our success of building communities for those families in need, as we have in the past in both Durham and in the GTA.
