Help Someone Reach their Full Potential:

Become a Habitat ReStore Mentor

TORONTO, August 5, 2022 – Habitat ReStore is looking for passionate and experienced individuals to volunteer for its new Habitat GTA Mentorship Program. Funding for this project was made possible by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program. This is an exciting opportunity for anyone aged 55 and up to tap into their leadership skills and share their knowledge to help train and inspire future Habitat ReStore volunteers.

“We are putting the call out for those aged 55 and up to join the Habitat Mentorship Program because they can bring forward their knowledge, life experience and wisdom and share it with new Habitat Restore volunteers – and that’s truly invaluable,” said Francine Negre Laroche, Habitat GTA Director of Volunteer Services. “When you volunteer for this program, you’re helping Habitat ReStore, which in turn, supports Habitat for Humanity GTA’s mission to build homes for local families.”

“Habitat GTA ReStore is a great example of the meaningful difference funding for programs through the New Horizons for Seniors Program can make in the lives of older adults,” said Canada’s Minister of Seniors, Kamal Khera. “Projects like these provide seniors with opportunities to stay socially connected and active in their communities. By delivering this support to seniors, we are empowering them and contributing to their overall well-being.”

Those who become part of the Habitat Mentorship Program will participate by:

  • Attending planning sessions virtually for eight to ten weeks to help write a guide that will be used to onboard new volunteers at Habitat ReStores.
  • Training new volunteers at various Habitat GTA ReStore locations for approximately ten weeks.

Mentors will play a key role in reinforcing the values that make Habitat for Humanity GTA and Habitat ReStore so essential to our communities and will learn more about:

  • The Habitat GTA mission, Guiding Principles, and safety policies.
  • The connection and impact of the work at Habitat GTA ReStores to building affordable homes for local families.
  • The positive environmental impact Habitat ReStores have by reducing the need for the production of new materials and consumption of natural resources – something that helps in the fight against climate change.

Those interested in learning more are invited to join Habitat GTA staff for a virtual information session on August 18 at noon. Participation in the session is recommended, but not mandatory to join the program.

If you would like to join us for the session and sign-up to volunteer for the Habitat GTA Mentorship Program please e-mail skillsbuilding@habitatgta.ca or call 416-755-7353 ext. 2225.
