On March 16th, Habitat for Humanity GTA made the decision to temporarily close our 13 Habitat ReStore locations to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 throughout our community. We remain proud of our choice and forever grateful to our customers, volunteers, donors, and other stakeholders for your understanding and support as we navigate our responsible path forward.
Temporarily closing our Habitat ReStores allowed us to avoid putting anyone at risk while we gained a better understanding of the situation surrounding COVID-19 and determined the proper course of action. We are pleased to announce today, that our stores have been temporarily converted into distribution locations to facilitate sales through our new e-commerce platform at habitatrestore.ca. That’s right, all the great finds you’re used to uncovering in our stores can now be viewed and purchased online, then shipped or delivered straight to your door. We have also instituted a new contact-less pick-up policy.

As part of our e-commerce reopening plan, we have put together Safe Work Procedures for each of our activity areas based on guidance from Health Canada and Ontario Public Health. We’ve instituted contact-less delivery and donation policies and have ensured our distribution location staff and drivers are all fully equipped with proper PPE and safe work education. Physical distancing and diligent sanitization measures are strongly enforced at all times to ensure the well-being of our staff, customers, and donors.
Habitat ReStore plays a critical role in supporting Habitat for Humanity GTA’s mission. When you support Habitat ReStore, you help fund homebuilding projects for local, working families in need of a safe, decent place to live. As customers and donors, you also enable our mission to extract as much value as possible from new and second hand household items, eliminating unnecessary waste and ultimately reducing our collective carbon footprint. Plus, your purchases are always tax-free and donations come with a tax receipt.
Habitat ReStore provides vital funding to Habitat for Humanity GTA. Our build sites and offices remain temporarily closed, but a core group of personnel continue to remotely push forth our mission while supporting our partner families and their mortgage obligations and capitalizing on land deals in communities in desperate need of affordable housing solutions. The launch of the new Habitat ReStore e-commerce platform is our way of continuing our mission, while supporting stringent physical distancing measures throughout the GTA.
