Coming Soon: The Senior Habitat Mentorship Program

Richard Sweetman

We are excited to announce that we will be creating a new program to engage and empower seniors in our community over the next year, while supporting Habitat GTA ReStore volunteers.

We’re calling it the Senior Habitat Mentorship Program! This will be an opportunity for seniors to join us to help mentor and train new ReStore volunteers. The program will be made up of two phases:

  1. During the first 8-10 weeks, we will be gathering our senior mentors to come together to collaborate and help put together the guide that will be instrumental in mentoring new ReStore volunteers.
  2. For the second phase, over about ten weeks, these senior mentors will be deployed to Habitat ReStores across the GTA to put their plan into action.

This will allow us to highlight the wonderful impact of senior volunteers, and we’re pretty pumped about the program! Mentors will play a key role in reinforcing the values that have made Habitat for Humanity GTA and ReStores so essential in our communities, including:

  • The Habitat GTA mission, Guiding Principles, and safety policies.
  • The connection and impact of the work at Habitat GTA ReStores to building affordable homes for local families.
  • The positive environmental impact ReStores have by reducing the need for the production of new materials and consumption of new materials and natural resources – something that helps in the fight against climate change.

The Senior Habitat Mentorship Program is an inclusive initiative that will engage our local seniors, who are already so critical to success in our ReStores. We’re excited to share more details in the future. Our Volunteer Services Team will be busy putting everything together, and  seniors interested in signing up will have the opportunity to do so in the coming weeks. A special thank you to the Government of Canada New Horizons for Seniors Program for its support in making this possible.
